This past week, while my my daughter was participating in dance classes at RGVAS, I was able to finish up a long over due project. The idea for this painting came to me back in late February as I was doing research for a mural at Harlingen Medical Center. At that time I created a digital version of what I really wanted to paint. The projects are similar in many ways yet they are also unique in their respective medium.
I kept the color scheme of the painting as close as I could to the original digital design but I felt it needed some white highlights to complete the shapes. I really enjoy working with complimentary colors. The blues in the background have a calming flow which I tried to emphasize with the horizontal brush strokes. The bright orange and yellow hues of the jellyfish change the mood of the painting, creating excitement and a strong sense of diagonal movement. The general direction is the same for all of the jellyfish yet I wanted them to look as if they were merely floating along with the current so I made the tentacles flow more freely. The painting can be seen at the Rio Grand Valley Arts Studio starting in August.
